Russia has been actively involved in the world’s history for thousands of years. One of Russia’s major influences in history was their involvement in The Great War from 1914 through 1918, also known as World War 1. Russia had to defend themselves against German and Austria, which in time lead to the Russian Revolution. A few years later, and a very influential man took over the Union if Soviet Socialist Russia. Joseph Stalin was a savior for some Russians, and a brutal dictator for the rest. One of the many moves that Stalin made included destroying the old party leadership after Lenin’s death, reversing the Bolshevik agrarian policy, and what Stalin is most famously known for—forming a nonaggression pact with Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany. World War 2 came close behind as Russia made the strategic plan to occupy Poland. The Germans decided to invade Poland as well, so Russian troops were forced to defend their territory. Fast forward 30 more years and in October of 1962, a dangerous situation occurred. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a serious confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This was the first time in history these two great superpowers were locked in a miscalculation if nuclear conflict. Wars aside, in 2002 Russia became an official member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. There has not been a major World war since.
